Blue Highway Pizza has the reputation of having the best pizza in Gainesville. After my visit, I can say that it really does. To get to this hidden place, you have to drive out a good bit, but it’s worth it. Micanopy may be a town away from Gainesville, but it’s a long, dark and scary drive to the middle of nowhere.

Upon walking into the restaurant, you are greeted with the scent of roasted garlic. The place was filled with locals. It is a nice escape from the college student traps you see around campus.

I went out to dinner with my roommate and my brother. My brother ordered a black cherry soda. My roommate, Jennifer, and I went with the cheap alternative of water.

Bruschetta is one of my all time favorite dishes. It could be the vinegary tomatoes flavored with bits of garlic, basil, Parmesan and olive oil, or it could be the crunchy garlic toast. Whatever it is, I love it.

My roommate ordered a roasted vegetable panini without cheese or aioli. She appreciates the healthier side of things, so a vegan sandwich was the way to go for her. For the record, I ate her potato chips. Those were a little too unhealthy for her as well. My philosophy with food is the unhealthier, the better.

My brother and I order “The Rustica”, Sicilian style. It was a thick crust pizza, topped with a combination of tasty ingredients, bacon, olives, mozzarella cheese, Gorgonzola, roasted eggplant and tomato sauce. The first bite was the best. Sinking our teeth into that thick crust while ten different flavors hit our palettes at once was great. The Rustica was delicious.

The local atmosphere and great quality food is what makes Blue Highway stand out. Not in the mood for pizza? Don’t worry, there are plenty of sandwiches and salads to go around too. Blue Highway Pizza is defiantly worth checking out. You can’t go wrong when there is good food and a relaxed environment involved.
